Danish Design Company Eliminates Paper From Its Logistics

Done by Deer has digitalized its internal logistics and has reduced its delivery times by up to 10 days and has gotten its packing error percentage down to almost zero.

International awards for design and quality are decorating the walls in the showroom at the Danish design company Done by Deer, which is located north of the city of Silkeborg. Done by Deer is a brand that designes, developes and sells almost anything that is used by children in their first year. Head of Purchase & Logistic Hans-Kurt Bejer is well aware that quality and danish design is sought-after internationally.

"Our growth has been explosive since we began in 2014. Our products are made in up to 10 different countries and are sold in up to 50 countries around the world. We are one of the leading brands in our business and it is up extreme importance to deliver our products as fast as possible to the stores, no matter if it is in Europe, Asia or other continents," says Hans-Kurt Bejer.

Too reliant on paperwork and Excel

In 2017 it began to be challenging to handle purchases, orders and warehouse status manually. The manual process meant it was necessary for staff to move many documents and send messages both internally and externally.

"We used both Excel and other software to keep an overview of what we have in the warehouse and which items have been handled. It meant a slow process of ingoing and outgoing items, that we were forced to get physically in our hands before we could process it. The manual processes also caused too many errors and it was not possible to get accurate answers to questions about delivery and stock status," says Hans-Kurt Bejer.

Done by Deer investigated the market of Warehouse Management Systems to find a partner with a system that could be configured to fit the company's routines and other software systems. The goal was to streamline all processes and make the logistics and workflow more efficient.

"We were given a presentation of Axacon and following that we were absolutely sure that it was the right partner for Done by Deer. Axacon had a great understanding of our demands of a WMS, and it was easy to find solutions that would optimize our need for logistics, says Hans-Kurt Bejer.

The staff is excited

Today there is not much paper left at the warehouse at Done by Deer. The staff is driving around their trucks in between endless rows of boxes and pallets full of toys, children's beds, teddy bears and products in all sizes only armed with a handheld scanner. An employee demonstrates proudly how it is almost impossible to pick the wrong item, as the scanner gives a red light and denies a pick of a mistaken item.

In the warehouse, an employee tells that there was a period of getting used to abandoning the old methods. People are creatures of habit and we like to do what we always did. He now works with Axacon WMS daily and is very happy with the new system and calls it a huge improvement.

Its not just in the warehouse that there is satisfaction. The boss is excited too.

"The implementation of Axacon has removed almost all manual processes. We now have a paperless logistical system, that has streamlined all processes in sales, purchasing, and warehouse. We are now able to plan all tasks ahead of time, as everything is registred and handled electronically. We have improved our delivery times with up to 10 days and we have a percentage of packing errors that is almost zero. It has without a doubt been a huge success for Done by Deer to implement a WMS, and have no doubt that we picked the right partner in Axacon," says Hans-Kurt Bejer.
